Dred Scott

I visited his gravesite on Thursday near St. Louis.

Dred Scott v Sanford remains one of worst of many horrific decision by the Supremes (U.S. Supreme Court) in its history. It affirmed what existed from day 1 in the U.S. Constitution in Article 4, Section 2 — that people are not people, but property. It was only abolished by the 13th Amendment.

Slavery was the legal fiction that people are property — it was abolished. Corporate “personhood” is the legal fiction that property are people — it too needs to be abolished.

It’s a sick irony that he died on “Constitution Day.”
