Robert Taney and the rest of the Supremes during a 30 year period proclaimed that people are property (upholding slavery in the Dred Scott decision) AND property are people (“corporate personhood” in the Santa Clara decision). Nice going guys. While people are property was largely abolished with the 13th Amendment (with the exception of the exceptions clause, “allowing [it] as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted”), the Supremes continue to expand property defined as people (corporate constitutional rights), the most recent example being the Hobby Lobby decision granting corporations First Amendment “religious rights.”
